Newquay to Padstow (3)
Padstow and the River Camel
Following pictures taken on 26.06.2008.
The middle boat here is the same TH288 seen pushing past Trevose on the previous page - I've checked the full-size original pictures.
(But this is actually the first picture, taken in June 2008 - the Trevose one was taken in September that same year.)

Here's what the National Lobster Hatchery does.
With so much sand about, it's no surprise that about a mile north of here there's a dangerous bar,
the Doom Bar, which cannot be crossed in heavy seas, especially if the wind is against the tide.
Sharp's Brewery in Rock makes a popular beer called Doom Bar!
There are regular passenger ferries between Padstow and Rock. The lowest bridge over the Camel
is near Wadebridge, which means a trip of about 12 miles by road from one side to the other.

Note the cyclists on the left: they are riding on the Camel Trail, which follows the
route of the railway to Padstow. (The railway was closed in 1983.) In a few miles
they'll cross the old railway bridge already seen on this page.
Top left of this picture you can just make out a tower on the skyline.
That has also been seen before - it's the Day Mark near Stepper Point!

This was a dangerous tidal ford before the bridge was built.
Two views from the old bridge, June 2005.
That's it! My tale is told, for now... (Latest site update: 19. 07. 2015.)
